AnyTrans iCloud Manager will help you delete all photos from iCloud storage with ease, or you can delete multiple photos from iCloud. Mar 06, 2016 My brother messed around a bit and turned off 'iCloud Photo Library' on the Photos app on the Mac. Now, since it was all synced and updated on all my devices, nothing bad really happened. Now I want to reactivate it on the Mac, and the whole upload process starts again. It shouldn't since all my pictures and videos are already on iCloud.

iCloud Photo Library is a very convenient way to keep photo libraries in sync across several Macs. Most changes done on one Mac will update across all Macs that are also using iCloud Photo Library (let's ignore the iOS devices for now).

Exceptions to the rule: Use Photos and iCloud Photo Library on multiple Mac computers - Apple Support

  • Projects do not sync: Books, Calendars, Cards, Slideshows
  • Faces thumbnails do not sync, only searchable faces tags (in Photos 1 and 2). In Photos 3 on High Sierra and Photos 4.0 the People album will sync between devices.
  • Referenced photos do not upload to iCloud Photo Library at all.

A Photos Library needs to be on a volume formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) or APFS, if you want to use iCloud Photo Library. https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht211de786Not all media items can upload to iCloud Photo Library. If the Photos Library has been migrated from iPhoto or Aperture, it can contain media, that are incompatible with iCloud Photo Library, for example some audio file formats or high resolution TIFF images. These will show as items 'Local only' at the bottom of the Photos view.Because the iCloud version of your Photos Library may be missing items compared to the local version, restoring a Photos Library from iCloud can be lossy. Always keep a good local backup.Occasionally Photos will start to upload the complete library again to iCloud to compare it to the iCloud version. This new upload may take a very long time. For example, my library with 36000 photos needed a full week to upload again. A new upload will happen after the following events:

  • If iCloud Photo Library is turned off and on again for a library.
  • If the Photos Library is moved to a different drive.
  • If the Photos Library is restored from a backup.
  • If the Photos Library is repaired; see the footnote in: 'Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support'

Try to avoid these situations, if possible. Repeated crashes of Photos can cause a repair of the library, but also permission issues, when using the Photos Library from different user accounts or over a network.

Avoid switching the system photo library, because it will disable iCloud Photo Library.

Avoid turning iCloud on in Aperture or iPhoto, because only one library can sync with iCloud Photo Library and enabling iCloud for a different library will disable it for your current library and cause the upload again.

If you want your Mac's photos to wirelessly sync to all your other iOS devices and computers, you want to set up iCloud Photo Library: Apple's photo sync service lets you back up your images on all your devices, as well as access them — online or offline — on said devices. If you're willing to pay for the extra iCloud storage space, you can store an incredible amount of photos and videos, all accessible at the touch of a button or multi-touch screen.

Here's how to set it up on your Mac and get everything configured to your liking!

How to set up iCloud Photo Library on your Mac

  1. Launch the Photos app on your Mac.
  2. Select the Photos menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
  3. Go to Preferences.
  4. Click on the iCloud tab.

How to optimize your photo and video storage

If you routinely shoot 4K video or high-quality images on your iPhone, iPad, or DSLR, you may run out of storage space fast. (I have a 1TB iMac, but also have almost a terabyte of 4K video stored in iCloud — it gets unwieldy, fast!) This is especially true if you have a Mac laptop with limited hard drive space: It's nice to look at your iPhone's gorgeous Portrait mode photos, but not necessarily always practical to store all of them locally.

Thankfully, Apple offers an Optimize Storage option, which lets you store full-resolution photos and videos of only your most recently shot and accessed imagery; all older photos and videos are available to download via iCloud and are stored as low-resolution previews on your device to save space. You can switch between optimizing your Mac's photos storage or storing your full library locally: Here's how!

Note: If you plan on using Optimize Storage, we suggest having at least one device that stores your entire library locally (usually a Mac with a large local or external hard drive), so you have multiple backups of your photographs and video.

  1. Launch the Photos app on your Mac.
  2. Click Photos in the App menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
  3. Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.

  4. Click the iCloud tab.
  5. Click Optimize Mac Storage.

Full-resolution versions of your photos and videos will be uploaded to iCloud.

How to share photos with iCloud Photo Library

Apple's photo service doesn't just provide online backups and sync for your images and video: The company also offers a free sharing service that allows you to send shared albums to friends and family (or create a publicly-shared website). Here's how to turn it on for your Mac.
